gouache and spray paint on cutout paper
34 x 26 1/4 in.
2014

Jim Gaylord is an american artist who received a BA in Film from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and later an MFA from The University of Berkley in California. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has had several solo exhibitions as well as even more group exhibitions.

One of the most prominent elements of design in this piece is the use of shape. As different pieces of paper have been used and put together to make a singular, coherent work of art. As the different pieces of paper are cut into different shapes, letting the viewer's eye to take in different and interesting shapes, it leads into Gaylord's use of line. Since so many shapes are different as well as overlapping, the eye will travel all across the art. The palette is simple, thus letting each colour shine on its own and pop out in different ways.

I decided to choose this piece for my post because it just spoke to me. It caught my eye with its simple colours and use of space. It's abstract despite it having several shapes in there that are recognizable. Not to mention it's interesting to see something with spray paint being used. I don't see it as much in professional galleries. Not to mention the use of gouache is so subtle in here. This entire piece I think, could be considered a painting btu also not. it's a mixed medium. It's fascinating to see it.
